- Palau de la Musica
- The Palau de la Musica (literally, "Palace of Music") was inaugurated in 1908 as the headquarters of the Orfeó Català (Catalan Philharmonic Society), founded by Lluis Millet as part of that revitalization of Catalan culture which took place in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. It was extensively remodelled in 1987–9 with an investment of 2,000m pesetas, and offers facilities for a wide range of activities, including concerts, recitals, congresses and receptions. The range of music covered is very varied, from the classical repertoire to popular and light music, jazz and flamenco. The main auditorium has seating for 2,200 people, and there is a chamber music hall, which seats 180 and provides perfect acoustics regardless of the number attending. Within the premises there is a music library and an important archive. In 1990 a foundation (called the Orfeó Català-Palau de la Musica Catalana) was created, financed by donations from business and individuals. By 1994 the income from this source totalled 500m pesetas. The Palau de la Musica has an annual budget of 2,000m pesetas a year, which pays, among other things, for the fortyeight permanent staff, and provides 80m pesetas for the maintenance of the halls. The Palau supports the Orfeó Català, its own resident Chamber Choir, and the Youth Choir of the Orfeó Català. In 1994, 260 concerts were held in the Palau, of which 110 were sponsored by the foundation. The Palau also has the mission of promoting new talent by supporting singers and songwriters and organizing series of concerts for young performers and composers.EAMONN RODGERS
